A typical issue for a SAN storage administrator are receive the complaint from the user / customer that they’re experiencing the performance issues on the storage array on a particular time  and the root cause is unknown.  

As if the usage of the SAN storage array has not change significantly and didn’t add any host or any change on the hardware recently. The SAN storage administrator will start to collect the information when was the problem happened, at what time? When? And what was the activity are running on that particular time during the problem occurred. This is usually is a challenge to the SAN storage administrator because most of the user / customer  might not know when or remember precisely what they were doing, and the difficulty to recall what has been done in the past few months.

 

With EMC Navisphere Analyzer, it allows the SAN storage administrator to gather the data from various blocks of schedule and time, and then study the data to see if there is any cue about the possibility that causes of the issues. For many issues, usually analyze the utilization of various SAN storage array’s components is sufficient to narrow down the basis of the problem. First thing to look at is the utilization of each LUN and then, if one of the particular LUN’s is in high utilization,  then narrow down into detail at the performance characteristics of that particular LUN.

 

When using EMC Navisphere Analyzer for troubleshooting and diagnostic, these basic data are good enough to analyze most of the Clariion’s box performance problem. They are, storage processor, utilization of the LUN, and/or hard-disks can help give a specific direction to narrow down and go into detail for researching a performance issue.

 

 

What is EMC Navisphere Analyzer?

EMC Navisphere Analyzer has two parts: The first part is a provider program is come with User Interface (UI) and accumulates performance information. In order to allow the data collection, the analyzer enabler must be enabled / installed on any storage array you want to monitor and analyze. It controls, accumulates, and manages access to performance information on storage processors (SPs), logical units (LUNs), and disks. The new information displaces the old.

 

For example, LUN to refer to LUNs, metaLUNs, and thin LUNs, except where explicitly noted. It can display real-time and archive file data simultaneously. EMC Navisphere Analyzer can display the performance data directly (in realtime) or as a file containing past performance data from an archive. You can compare charts from various SAN storage array (using real-time data) or compare various times on one SAN storage array (using archive data  and real-time).
