UDW2TBUCKURD   The future of storage has arrived! EMC's new unified storage line, called VNX, is expected to be the cheapest in its class and will allow EMC to make inroads into the small and medium enterprise (SME) market.

The VNX launched in early 2011 the new VNX unified storage platform from EMC redefines data management and protection possibilities, by creating simple, efficient, powerful and affordable solutions that are optimized for today’s virtualized IT. The system is more of a logical successor to Celerra, which already supported block and file storage, while Clariion was a block storage (Fibre Channel and iSCSI) platform.

The VNX storage supports high availability by using redundancy component, such as Storage processors, Power supplies, Fans as well as dynamic failover and failback. VNAX storage enables to upgrade system software or hardware while the VNAX system is live production.

NX includes code from Clariion Flare and Celerra Dart operating systems, but it's not clear if VNX uses two separate operating systems. Flare and Dart will be called VNX Operating Environment for File and VNX Operating Environment for Block on the new systems.  The VNX operating environment enables Windows and Unix clients to share files in multi-protocol (NFS and CIFS) environments.  VNX system supports Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and FCoE access for high bandwidth and latency sensitive block applications.
